TL;DR

  • Anthropic is combining Claude Chat and Cowork, allowing Claude to choose the capabilities required for each task.
  • Claude Docs and Slides create editable, shareable documents and presentations inside a conversation.
  • The unified experience is rolling out to Pro and Max users first, with other plans following.
  • Both creation tools remain in beta, and Claude Docs still lacks features such as version history.
  • The update brings Claude closer to becoming a complete working environment, but it does not yet replace Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.

Claude combines Chat and Cowork

Anthropic announced the changes on 16 September 2026. Instead of choosing between a normal conversation and the longer-running Cowork mode, users will make both types of request through the same Claude interface.

Claude will decide which capabilities a task requires. It can provide a quick answer or begin a longer process involving research, connected apps, files and finished deliverables.

This does not mean Cowork’s underlying capabilities are disappearing. Existing chats, projects, connectors, skills and other work will move into the unified experience. Once an account has been migrated, however, the separate Chat and Cowork options cannot be restored.

The rollout begins with Pro and Max subscribers across the web, desktop and mobile apps. Anthropic says Team and Free plans will follow, while Enterprise customers will receive at least 30 days’ notice before the interface changes.

What Claude Docs and Slides can do

The most interesting part of the announcement is the ability to move from research to finished work without starting again in another tool.

Claude Docs creates editable documents containing headings, tables and multiple tabs. Claude can draft the content, explain decisions through comments and make further changes when asked. Other people can edit and comment on the same document in real time.

Finished documents can be exported to Microsoft Word, PDF, Markdown or Google Docs. Claude can also turn a document into a presentation using Claude Slides.

Claude Slides works similarly for presentations. Users can ask Claude to draft a deck, edit individual slides and present it directly from Claude. The completed presentation can also be downloaded as a PowerPoint or PDF file.

Because the document and presentation can come from the same conversation, Claude retains the project context instead of making users repeatedly explain the same work.

Where the beta still falls short

Claude Docs and Slides are both beta products, and some important limitations remain.

Docs does not currently include version history or a comment-only permission. Charts and diagrams do not automatically update when the information in a connected source changes.

Team and Enterprise users cannot share documents outside their organisation yet. Mobile users can view Docs, but they cannot edit them, start from a template or change sharing settings.

These gaps matter because document software is rarely judged only by the first draft. Reliable collaboration, revision tracking and access controls are essential when work is being used across a business.

Why Google and Microsoft should pay attention

Anthropic is moving Claude beyond producing text responses and towards creating the files people use for actual work.

That places it closer to Google’s Gemini-powered Workspace features and Microsoft’s Copilot tools. However, Claude still exports into Google Docs, Word and PowerPoint. Google and Microsoft therefore continue to control much of the collaboration and distribution process after the initial content has been created.

The immediate challenge may be less about replacing those platforms and more about becoming the place where a project begins.

(Since this article was published, Google has pushed Gemini further into the computer itself. Googlebook now combines Gemini with cursor controls, dictation, file search and background tasks. It’s a clear sign how Google is trying to influence both where projects begin and the device used to complete them.)

My Digitalize Life View

What interests me most is being able to take one conversation from the initial research through to a finished document and presentation. Keeping everything together should save time and reduce the need to repeatedly explain the same project as you move between different tools.

This could become a serious challenge for Google and Microsoft, particularly if Claude produces genuinely usable work rather than rough files that still need extensive editing. For now, though, Docs and Slides are beta products. Their reliability and the quality of the finished output will decide whether this becomes a proper working environment or simply another impressive-looking feature.

What to watch next

The main test will be how quickly Anthropic improves collaboration, version history and mobile editing.

It will also be worth watching whether users continue exporting their work into Google and Microsoft products or begin treating Claude as the main place where documents and presentations live.
